2023 Mustang World Series Championship Game
Championship Game: Costa Mesa, CA 17, Tijuana, MX 7
Costa Mesa defeated Tijuana 17-7 on Monday thanks in part to 11 runs in the ninth inning.
Costa Mesa jumped out to the lead in the top of the second inning after Kennedy singled, scoring one run, Tu grounded out, scoring one run, Benoit singled, scoring one run, and Oliver doubled, scoring two runs.
Tijuana captured the lead, 6-5, in the bottom of the fourth when a dropped third strike scored one run, Flores singled, scoring one run, and Vejar singled, scoring two runs.
Llamas balked, which helped Costa Mesa tie the game at six in the top of the fifth.
Costa Mesa flipped the game on its head in the top of the ninth, scoring 11 runs on 10 hits to take a 17-6 lead. The biggest blow in the inning was a triple by Benoit that drove in three.
Oliver earned the win for Costa Mesa. They surrendered five hits and one run over five innings, striking out two and walking three. Llamas took the loss for Tijuana. The starting pitcher went five innings, allowing six runs on nine hits, striking out six and walking none. Tu stepped on the hill first for Costa Mesa. The starting pitcher allowed five hits and six runs over three and two-thirds innings, striking out four and walking two.
Tijuana piled up 11 hits in the game. Tijuana's Peña made the most of their chances at the plate. The number eight hitter led the team with three hits in five at bats. Vejar drove the middle of the lineup, leading Tijuana with three runs batted in. The number three hitter went 2-for-3 on the day. Flores collected two hits for Tijuana in four at bats.
Costa Mesa collected 20 hits in the game. Benoit, Jennings, and Oliver each collected three hits for Costa Mesa. Elijah seized on their opportunities, leading Costa Mesa with four runs batted in from the number nine spot in the lineup. They went 3-for-5 on the day. Andrew, Kennedy, LaLonde, Dunham, and Tu each collected multiple hits for Costa Mesa. Kennedy and Oliver each stole multiple bases for Costa Mesa. Costa Mesa ran wild on the base paths, amassing nine stolen bases for the game. Costa Mesa were steady-handed and didn't commit a single error. Kennedy made the most plays with 11.
